‘And it is also said,’ answered Frodo: ‘Go not to the Elves for counsel for they will answer both no and yes.’
‘Is it indeed?’ laughed Gildor. ‘Elves seldom give unguarded advice, for advice is a dangerous gift, even from the wise to the wise, and all courses may run ill.”
J.R.R. Tolkien – The Fellowship of the Ring
Most of us could learn a thing or two from the Elves, I think. We are too free with our opinions, advice, and counsel; even when well meaning and earnestly sought. We have precious little regard for the responsibility we bear for our words and the weight of their consequences.
I don’t know about you, but I’ve given far too much advice in my life, and am certainly not counted among the Wise.
